The Division of Transfusion Medicine's overall research focus involves understanding the role of segmental duplication and copy number variation in human disease susceptibility and pathogenesis. Segmental duplications, blocks of transposed genomic DNA within or between chromosomes, have long been recognized as an important substrate for the evolution of novel genes. As a result of the human genome project, they are now generally recognized as a significant source of copy number variation (variation between normal individuals) that can impact human disease. We are optimizing both experimental and computational approaches for the assessment of copy number variation within the context of several specific diseases. Utilizing technologies such as array comparative genomic hybridization and massively-parallel sequencing we hope to gain novel insight into etiologic and pathogenic mechanisms.
One focus of the lab is directed towards dissecting the role of copy number variation in the pathogenesis of malaria. Malaria has been one of the strongest selective forces affecting the human population and still accounts for an estimated two to three million deaths per year. Another focus of the lab isexamining the role of copy number variation in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig disease.
Position will focus on performing large-scale human genomic and genetic analyses using innovative techniques mainly involving high-throughput next-generation sequencing within a laboratory concentrated on understanding the role of DNA copy number variation and the genetics of infectious disease.
Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator or designee, the Research Laboratory Technician I, performs a variety of specimen preparatory techniques, dry lab data collection, and routine laboratory maintenance.
